‘It was already too late’: Witness recounts Megan Gallagher’s final moments

A Saskatoon man said Megan Gallagher died after her face was covered with plastic wrap.

Gallagher, 30, died on Sept. 20, 2020, inside a Weldon Avenue garage, where she was restrained to a chair.

Robert James Thomas, 30, took the witness stand Thursday in the manslaughter trial of Roderick William Sutherland.

Thomas testified he had been “set up” about a month before.

“I was held hostage and stabbed multiple times,” Thomas testified.

Thomas testified he feared it would happen again, and suspected Gallagher was at the garage to set him up.

“Rod told me ... ‘I got her for you brother,’ and he was showing me what he used,” Thomas said.

“What did he show you?” Burge asked.

“Knuckle busters,” Thomas responded.

Thomas testified that Gallagher was beaten while tied to a chair.

“I elbowed her twice to make her stop,” Thomas testified.

“Stop what?” the Crown asked.

“Being loud,” Thomas responded.

Thomas testified the volume on a portable speaker was turned up “so no one would hear.”

Summer-Sky Henry was the one who wrapped Gallagher’s face: Thomas

Thomas said there was a group of people drinking and getting high in the garage — including Summer-Sky Henry.

“I told Summer to wrap her body in Saran Wrap, but she didn’t wrap her body, she ended up wrapping her whole face,” Thomas testified.

Henry has been convicted of manslaughter.

Thomas said when he approached Gallagher “it was already too late ... she was already gone.”

Quiet sobs could be heard in the gallery as Thomas recounted Gallagher’s final moments.

Thomas testified he returned to the garage about four days later and Gallagher’s body was gone.

According to an agreed statement of facts, Ernest Vernon Whitehead and John Wayne Sanderson put Gallagher’s body in the back of Sanderson’s truck.

Gallagher’s remains were found in the river near St. Louis, Sask. on Sept. 29, 2022.
