A 7-year-old boy in Saskatoon is being recognized for his bravery after warning his neighbours about a fire, helping a woman and her 91-year-old mother escape safely. Jayce was playing in his front yard when he noticed flames at the house next door. He got someone to call 911, then ran two houses down to warn his neighbour, Connie Seibel, about the fire. “Me and my brother saw it together and I went and told the lady,” Jayce said in an interview with CTV News. The fire, which is still under investigation, was reported around 7 p.m. on July 29 on the 1400 block of Avenue B North in Saskatoon’s Mayfair neighbourhood. Seibel says she was surprised to hear a knock at her door that night. It was Jayce, warning her about the fire. “He just said there’s a fire next door,” she said. “He was just so matter of fact and so calm.” Seibel said the house next door was vacant, but the flames eventually spread to her home. Thanks to Jayce’s quick thinking, she and her 91-year-old mother, who has limited mobility, were able to get to safety. “It’s amazing what kids have learned or have been taught and how automatic they kick into action when they have to,” she said. “He’s amazing.” Others in the neighbourhood were also impressed by Jayce’s bravery. “It’s just great to hear that kids are still willing to go out of their way to make sure people are safe,” Katteresa Zwarich, who lives across the street, said. “It’s always good to know that there’s still a Spiderman looking out for the community.” Jayce says he feels good knowing he was able to help. Seibel says she was between insurance companies and does not have coverage for the fire damage. Zwarich has started a GoFundMe page to help Seibel cover some of the costs. As of Thursday evening, the campaign has raised just over $1,050 of its $5,000 goal.
