He may not be sporting the green hair this season, but Saskatchewan Huskies defensive back Seth Hundeby is serving notice to teams across the Canada West conference. Hundeby was just named defensive player of the week after notching his first career interception, which he ran back for a touchdown against Alberta. “A lot goes into it. A lot of the D-line and the DB’s covering. You know as a fifth-year player, every play I’m just thinking ‘fly around, have fun, hit somebody’. So, I’m really honoured that I got named that,” Hundeby said. “Seth had a good game. He’s a fifth year. He’s a captain. He’s a leader. He’s an incredible football player,” head coach Scott Flory said ahead of the team’s practice on Wednesday. The 2025 CFL draft pick by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and former conference all-star is in his final year with the Huskies, and says he’s fine embracing a leadership role. “Just being through two Vanier’s myself and then going to Riders camp, I do feel like I have some more experience to help out some of the younger guys. And keep things going smoothly as much as I can.” Hundeby is part of a defensive group featuring returning players like Charlie Parks, Jacob Goldstone and Ethan Laing, who says he knew Hundeby before his days in college football. “He played ball with my older brother. So, I was kind of around him growing up and he’s just like, on field, such a reliable guy. He knows his job. He knows what everyone else does,” Laing said. Charlie Parks calls Hundeby one of the nicest guys he has ever met, but says when it comes to crunch time on the field, Hundeby is all business. “There’s a bit of a joke with the team. You can tell when angry Seth comes out. And when angry Seth comes out, he’s a guy you don’t want to be in front of”. Saskatchewan’s defence hopes to rise to the occasion this week against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds — a team that will offer a stiff test for this defensive core. The Huskies faced the Thunderbirds in a preseason contest two weeks ago and came away with an 18-2 lead before the game was called after one half because of severe weather. Aside from the possibility of a 2-0 start, there is also plenty of motivation with Friday’s game being ‘homecoming’ for the Huskies. “I’m not sure how many tickets have sold. But yeah, hoping for a really loud crowd,” Hundeby said. His teammate Ethan Laing says it should be a good, physical battle. “They’re going to fly around and make plays, were going to do the same” Kickoff is 7pm on Friday night at Griffiths Stadium.
