Spring seeding underway in parts of Saskatchewan, some areas delayed due to flooding

Producers in some parts of Saskatchewan have begun seeding, while other areas are delayed due to flooding and runoff.

According to the provincial crop report covering April 28 to May 4, three per cent of the 2026 crop has been planted, behind the five year average of 12 per cent and the 10 year average of 13 per cent.

Cold temperatures, frozen soils, and washed-out roads have limited seeding progress for several areas in Saskatchewan but is expected to change in the next few weeks.

East-central, northeast, and northwest regions are all reporting delayed seeding, while the southwest region is the furthest advanced with seven per cent seeded.

Five per cent of seeding is complete in the southeast region and only one per cent is complete in the west-central region.

In terms of topsoil moisture, conditions are mainly at adequate levels overall. However, some areas in Saskatchewan are experiencing drier or surplus conditions.

In the west-central and southwest regions, producers are hopeful for moisture to support water supplies and pasture conditions.
