RM of Edenwold recovers majority of funds lost to fraud scheme

A Saskatchewan RM has recovered much of the money stolen in a summer fraud scheme.

The Rural Municipality of Edenwold has been able to recover most of the funds lost to a fraud scheme over the summer.

A fraudster had electronically posed as the Wastewater Authority jointly owned by the RM and the Town of White City, which led to the RM losing $470,000 and the town losing $200,000.

The municipalities notified RCMP and their financial institutions after discovering the fraudulent activity.

On Wednesday, the RM said $377,376.03 was successfully recovered from their financial institutions.

According to the RM, the fraud incident was isolated and targeted and “did not involve any breach of internal municipal systems,” noting that no personal ratepayer information was compromised.

The Town of White City has not released any update regarding the funds but were actively cooperating with RCMP to recover the funds.
