The jury in Dillon Whitehawk’s double murder trial heard from Regina police officers Monday as testimony detailed evidence investigators say connects him to the 2019 deaths of Jordan Denton and Keenan Toto. Whitehawk is facing two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the killings. On Jan. 3, officers were called to the 1900 block of Montreal Street after a gun and a cellphone were found. A pair of gloves and a balaclava were also located with the items. Security video from the home where the items were discovered was played in court. The footage showed a person running to the location where the items were later found. Footprints were also discovered in the snow at the drop-off point. Police said the serial number on the gun remained intact. Through analysis of the cellphone, investigators located photos Whitehawk had taken of himself. In one image, he appears to be wearing the same style of gloves found with the gun and phone. One Regina Police Service officer also testified about Whitehawk’s arrest the following day. On Jan. 4, police received a call reporting Whitehawk was at a convenience store at the corner of Victoria Avenue and Winnipeg Street. Officers arrested him inside the store. Another RPS member, who was part of the crime reduction unit at the time of the murders, testified that the guns used in the killings had been purchased legally. Gabriel Whitehawk, Dillon Whitehawk’s brother, held a possession and acquisition licence (PAL). Using that licence, he purchased two firearms from Cabela’s in Regina — an SKS rifle and a Ruger rifle — both types used in the murders. A witness who cannot be identified due to a publication ban also testified, saying they saw Whitehawk on the morning of Nov. 9, 2019. According to the testimony, Whitehawk stopped by and asked if the witness had any .22-calibre bullets. Five more witnesses are scheduled to testify. The trial continues Tuesday.
