One person killed in highway collision between propane truck and semi

A fatal crash west of Fort Qu’Appelle spilled propane, forced Highway 10 to close in both directions as crews complete a cleanup.

One person has died following a crash on Highway 10 near Fort Qu’Appelle Wednesday evening.

Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP received a report of a crash at around 6:50 p.m. Officers discovered that a propane truck and semi collided, according to an update from RCMP.

RCMP said a pick-up truck then left the roadway and drove into the ditch to avoid another collision.

The driver of the propane truck, a 73-year-old man from Fort Qu’Appelle, was declared dead by EMS at the scene, RCMP said.

RCMP said the drivers of the other vehicles did not report injuries to police, noting that none of the vehicles held any passengers.

In an earlier update on Thursday morning, RCMP revealed that propane was spilled in the crash – resulting in a longer than expected cleanup. A safety perimeter was set around the area, and the propane is being removed from the area, RCMP said.

The crash shut down traffic in both directions and the highway is anticipated to remain closed for most of Thursday.

Once the clean-up is complete, a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist will continue investigating.
