New Saskatchewan animal welfare agency officially active

The Saskatchewan Animal Enforcement Agency will now oversee welfare services provincewide, excluding Regina.

Saskatchewan’s new agency tasked with providing animal welfare services is now officially active, according to the province.

The Saskatchewan Animal Enforcement Agency (SAEA) will now be providing animal welfare enforcement services following a transition period with the Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan – which ended March 31.

Members of the public can now report suspected animal cruelty or abuse to the SAEA by calling 306-382-0002 or visiting their website.

According to the province, the SAEA is responsible for enforcing the Animal Protection Act throughout Saskatchewan, while the Regina Humane Society provides animal welfare services for the City of Regina.

“Our government’s partnership with the [SAEA] ensures that animal welfare enforcement continues without interruption,” Agriculture Minister David Marit said in a news release from the province. “This new agency brings a strong, long-term approach that supports effective and compassionate enforcement that protects communities and animals across Saskatchewan.”

SAEA CEO Lavan Thirukketheesawaranathan said the organization services the people and animals of the province through “professional, transparent, and accountable” enforcement.

“In the communities we serve, including urban companion animal settings, rural livestock operations, and First Nations communities, we prioritize education and voluntary compliance while taking decisive action when animals are in distress,” he said.

Anyone with concerns regarding animal control, dangerous animals, and stray animals should contact their local municipal or rural municipal office.
