Gun charges laid after woman found sleeping in vehicle resists arrest

A Regina woman has been charged after police discovered weapons in the vehicle she was sleeping in.

On Tuesday evening, at around 6:10 p.m., officers were called to the 300 block of Forget Street after a man was seen slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle.

Officers arrived at the scene and saw the man moving inside the vehicle. Police told the man to get out of the vehicle – which he did.

Officers then tried for several minutes to wake up a woman who was sleeping in the backseat. Police noted that a gun was visible on the seat next to the woman.

Due to the safety risk, members of the service’s tactical support team and the canine unit were called in.

Following a “lengthy process” to get the woman out of the vehicle – she finally emerged but resisted arrest. During her arrest, police say she was bitten by a police service dog. She was taken to hospital with injuries consistent with a dog bite.

A search of the vehicle revealed a sawed-off rifle and a shotgun.

As a result of the investigation, a 25-year-old woman from Regina was charged with five counts of possessing a firearm contrary to prohibition order, two counts of possessing a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, three counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle and two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm.
