Giant rabbit sculpture unveiled at University of Regina Campus

Students, alumni, and artists collaborated on the creation of “Jack Rabbit,” now part of the U of R’s permanent outdoor art collection.

A larger-than-life ceramic sculpture of a giant rabbit was officially unveiled on the University of Regina (U of R) campus on Friday.

The project took about two years to complete and was created by students in a public ceramic art class.

The sculpture is named Jack Rabbit, a nod to both the large number of wild rabbits on campus, and Professor Jack Sures, the man who founded the U of R ceramics program in 1965.

The sculpture is now part of the University president’s art collection and is expected to be on display for many decades to come.

David Dick, the Dean of the Faculty of Media, Arts, and Performance at the U of R, said the sculpture provides inspiration for many future students, having already become a part of the tours for potential students in the faculty.

“If there are high school students out there that visit us and they’re seeing what we have for facilities, we also make sure we walk by Jack Rabbit and talk about how this is out of a class project, and it usually blows them away,” he explained.

The ceramic tiles covering the exterior of the giant hare were well fired and then covered with a clear coat to repel the rain.
