Winter parking ban in effect Sunday as Ottawa expects 10-15 cm of snow Saturday night

The City of Ottawa will be issuing a winter weather parking ban Sunday with heavy snowfall in the forecast.

A special weather statement from Environment Canada says snowfall could be heavy at times Saturday evening, coming at up to 4 centimetres per hour, which could make travel hazardous. The forecast calls for between 10 and 15 centimetres of snow by Sunday.

“Snow is forecast to develop early this evening and then become heavy at times,” the statement says. “The snow will diminish in intensity overnight. Travel will likely be challenging. Roads and walkways may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.”

There will be a winter weather parking ban for Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. to assist with snow-clearing operations.

The City of Ottawa says these hours might be extended if additional time is needed to complete winter road operations. Alternative parking during a parking ban can be found by visiting the city’s Winter Parking webpage

The city can declare a winter weather parking ban when seven centimetres or more of snow is in the forecast. Only vehicles with on-street parking permits are permitted to park on city streets during the parking ban. The fine for violating the ban is $125, with an early payment option of $105.

Ottawa forecast

The forecast for Saturday calls for increasing cloudiness with snow, heavy at times, to fall throughout the evening. About 10 to 15 cm is expected.

Snowfall should taper off overnight, but there is a risk of freezing rain with a low of -1 C.

Sunday’s forecast is cloudy with a few flurries in the morning and ending in the late afternoon. There is a risk of freezing drizzle in the morning. The high is 1 C, with a wind chill of -10.

Expect clouds, a 60 per cent chance of snow, and a high of -3 C on Monday.
