Who will be tonight’s Oscars winners? Ottawa film reviewer provides his take

With the 98th Academy Awards just 48 hours away, "Mr. Hollywood" Matt Demers joins Your Morning Ottawa to reveal his high-stakes predictions for Hollywood’s big

The Academy Awards are taking off on Sunday evening, which means Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, is here provide his insight on Hollywood’s biggest night.

Mr. Hollywood joined CTV’s Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to provide his picks for some of the Oscar’s most coveted prizes.

Actress in a supporting role

The nominees:

• Elle Fanning — Sentimental Value
• Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas — Sentimental Value
• Amy Madigan — Weapons
• Wunmi Mosaku — Sinners
• Teyana Taylor — One Battle After Another

Mr. Hollywood’s Take:

“So many great ladies here, but I’m going with Amy Madigan,” Demers said.

Mr. Hollywood says Madigan is a “scene stealer” playing Aunt Gladys in the horror hit.

“You have never seen a performance like this before, trust me,” Mr. Hollywood said. “This movie was one of the greats of last year.”

Actor in a supporting role

The nominees:

• Benicio del Toro — One Battle After Another
• Jacob Elordi — Frankenstein
• Delroy Lindo — Sinners
• Sean Penn — One Battle After Another
• Stellan Skarsgård — Sentimental Value

Mr. Hollywood’s take:

“I’m going with Sean Penn,” Mr. Hollywood said. “A veteran actor through and through.”

Penn takes on the role of Steven J. Lockjaw in Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, a character that Mr. Hollywood says you will “love to hate.”

“We love a good villain in the movies and he’s maybe my favourite recently,” Demers said. “He’s the antagonist and he’s the best at doing it in this movie.”

Actress in a leading role

The nominees:

• Jessie Buckley — Hamnet
• Rose Byrne — If I Had Legs I’d Kick You
• Kate Hudson — Song Sung Blue
• Renate Reinsve — Sentimental Value
• Emma Stone — Bugonia

Mr. Hollywood’s take:

“I’m going Jessie Buckley,” Mr. Hollywood said.

Buckley is nominated for her role as Agnes Shakespeare in “Hamnet,” a performance for which she’s already picked up several awards.

“She’s going to steal your heart and then she’s going to break it. It’s such a heartbreaking, beautiful, engrossing performance. She is just wonderful here, bring the tissues when you watch this movie,” he said.

Actor in a leading role

The nominees:

• Timothée Chalamet — Marty Supreme
• Leonardo DiCaprio — One Battle After Another
• Ethan Hawke — Blue Moon
• Michael B. Jordan — Sinners
• Wagner Moura — The Secret Agent

Mr. Hollywood’s take:

“I’m sweating a little bit because I did some jumbling here, but I’m sticking with Michael B. Jordan, from Sinners,” Demers said. “Sorry, Timothée Chalamet. I did the switch to Michael B.”

Jordan takes on a dual role in this vampire-horror blockbuster, playing twin brothers Smoke and Stack.

“Man, does he deserve this,” Mr. Hollywood said. “He’s not playing one character, he’s playing two, and half the time in the movie, he’s acting against himself.”

Mr. Hollywood’s take:

“My pick is One Battle After Another,” Demers said.

“It’s got it all. It’s got that ensemble cast that just knocks it out of the park. You’ve got the director, Paul Thomas Anderson, who I also think will win Best Director, and you’ve got this wonderful movie that bounces all these different genres. It’s action, it’s funny, it’s intriguing, it’s timely, and man, it’s a movie that will keep you on the edge.”
