It’s the long weekend, which means there will be even more time than usual to check out new films in the theatres. Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, joined CTV’s Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to discuss three new films you can see on the big screen this weekend. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (PG-13) While this movie has all the fun adventures movie-goers should expect from the Tom Holland Spider-Man series, Mr. Hollywood says it spins out a “darker, more mature film.” “The film’s kind of grown up with Tom here, but thrilling adventure and genuine emotional weight,” he said. “No spoilers, of course, but some big stakes at hand, and some really great performances.” The film stars Holland, Zendaya and Mark Ruffalo. It was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. I Want Your Sex (R) Mr. Hollywood says this film is a spicy and raunchy comedy with sharp commentary. “It’s also really interesting. It’s this kind of film about connection and kind of different generations and how they look at connection,” he said. “Listen, there’s no shortage of laughs here.” The film was co-written and directed by Gregg Araki, and stars Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman and Mason Gooding. Sheep in the Box (Not rated) “Sheep in the Box” follows a Japanese couple who welcome an infant humanoid robot to replace their dead son, Mr. Hollywood said. “So it’s tackling interesting themes here. It is very touching and thought-provoking. You know, this is a domestic film that delivers kind of powerful ideas,” he said. “Do have the tissues ready. It’s one of those, but it does get you thinking about you know, are we there?” The film was written and directed by Hirokazu Koreeda and stars Haruka Ayase, Daigo Yamamoto and Rimu Kuwaki.
