The Timmins Police Service is warning the public of a continued high police presence in the city as officers search for a suspect in an overnight homicide. The investigation stems from reports of gunfire shortly after midnight on July 31 in the Balsam/Cedar Street North area. “Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from significant injuries,” the service said in an updated news release Friday afternoon. “Officers immediately secured the scene, seized one firearm, and began providing emergency first aid until emergency medical services arrived.” The victim was transported to hospital “in vital signs absent condition” and was later pronounced dead. “The Timmins Police is asking that persons stay clear of the area until further notice,” the service said in its initial news release Friday morning. Search continues The service said its criminal investigations division has assumed conduct of the case, with assistance from Ontario Provincial Police teams including the OPP canine unit. Authorities said officers cleared a residence on Cedar Street North as part of efforts to locate the suspect. “Despite extensive efforts, the suspect has not yet been located,” police in an updated news release Friday afternoon. Investigators said police believe the victim and suspect were known to each other and that the attack was targeted. Ongoing investigation Police have not released any descriptions of the suspect. Timmins police added that “additional information will be released as it becomes available and when it is appropriate to do so without compromising the investigation.” “The Timmins Police Service would like to thank members of the public for their patience, cooperation and understanding while officers responded to this incident,” said police.
