What’s playing this weekend: Feb. 20-22

We're checking out this week's new movies with Mr. Hollywood, including an Elvis concert film and the latest starring Glen Powell.

Film critic Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, joined CTV Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to speak about three new films playing in cinemas this weekend.

How to Make a Killing (Rated R)

This Glen Powell-led film is about a man trying to take back a large inheritance, no matter the cost.

“His character is trying to reclaim his family inheritance, and he’s got to get rid of a few people,” Mr. Hollywood said.

The movie smoothly blends comedy, drama and emotion thanks to Powell’s performance, Demers says.

“He’s the one that elevates this so well. He’s got really great charm,” he said. “I had fun with this, to see where he goes and if he will end up with the money at the end.”

The film was written and directed by John Patton Ford. It stars Powell, Margaret Qualley and Jessica Henwick.

Psycho Killer (Rated R)

“Psycho Killer” is a horror film from director Gavin Polone.

“A serial killer is on the loose, and that’s pretty much all you need to know,” Mr. Hollywood said. “It goes on that streak of him taking people down and will he get caught?”

While the film may have some appeal for fans of “gritty horror,” Demers says it treads familiar ground.

“I feel like I’ve seen this before,” Mr. Hollywood said.

“It’s not going to win any awards, I’ll say that much.”

The film stars Georgina Campbell, James Preston Rogers and Malcolm McDowell.

Epic: Elvis Presley in Concert (Rated PG-13)

While Demers says “Psycho Killer” likely won’t contend come awards season, this documentary on the King of Rock and Roll should.

“I loved this movie,” he said. “This is Elvis Presley, a documentary performance film like nothing you’ve seen before.”

The film is directed by Baz Luhrmann, who directed 2022’s “Elvis,” and Demers says this film will be a hit for fans of the music legend.

“You’ll feel like you’re watching him,” Mr. Hollywood said. “I saw this in IMAX, and it felt like I was looking at Elvis in the eyes. Wonderful stuff. So dynamic.”
