A vehicle with snow covering the windows on all sides was stopped after being spotted by an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer Friday afternoon on Road 38 north of Kingston, police say.

The officer used a siren to alert the driver to pull over on the road in South Frontenac Township, the OPP told CTV News Ottawa in a statement.

“It is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act if you don’t remove the snow for a clear view,” the OPP said in a post on X.

The driver of the vehicle received a warning and was not charged.

However, police say that the offence could result in an $85 fine and court costs for a total of $110.

The OPP is also reminding people to stick to Service Ontario’s rules when hitting the roads in winter, especially during snowstorms.

Here are some tips to stay safe when driving in winter:

• Delay your trip if the weather is bad.
• Check road conditions before leaving your home.
• Clear snow and ice from the vehicle’s windows, lights, mirrors and roof.
• Pay attention to the road surface and always give space when driving, as it takes longer to stop on icy and slippery roads.
• Do not use your phone while driving.
• In poor visibility and whiteout conditions, use the vehicle’s full lighting system.
• Use winter tires.

Police note the importance of checking tires regularly for wear and pressure. When the temperatures are very cold, tire pressure goes down, putting you and others at risk.
