Shoppers hunt for international treasures at the One World Bazaar in Manotick

People flocked to experience the music, food and treasures at the Manotick marketplace. CTV’s Camille Wilson has the story.

Market-goers has the chance to experience the world under one roof on Sunday at the One World Bazaar in Manotick.

The pop-up market specializing in unique one-of-a-kind pieces and handmade treasure from across the globe has been around for 44 years and is open for ten weekends in the fall.

The bazaar is located in a barn and shoppers can everything from paintings, home décor, furniture, trinkets, clothing, jewellery, dishes, vibrant pottery, wooden animals and furniture.

“We usually come here every year. We poke around and look at all the beautiful and interesting artisan work from all around the world,” says Tony Hahn, shopper.

Alongside shopping, people can find music and food from across the globe.

“First time checking out, the market. It’s cool to see all the handcrafted goods here,” said shopper Emily Gelgoot.

The bazaar’s owners go to different corners of the globe to work directly with the artisans and bring goods back to Ottawa for the seasonal sale in the fall.

“People just want something different,” said Anneka Bakker, Owner & General Manager of One World Bazaar.

“They want some uniqueness in their homes, in their wardrobes, from a jewelry perspective. I think we’ve done a really great job of making it a unique experience.”

Items were sourced from countries all over world like Morocco, Costa Rica, India, Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia, Turkey, Kenya, Ecuador, Nepal, Egypt and more.

“I was looking for my grandchildren and it’s so colorful. I thought, ‘what am I going to get for my grandchildren?’ I might just find something here because there’s lots to find and lots to see, and I think my whole family would like it,” says shopper Beryl Ben-Reuven.

“I think people can expect to be surprised. Our business model overstimulates people when they walk in the door. They can expect the unexpected,” says Bakker.

Bakker says the bazaar works in partnership with the talented international artisans and proceeds from purchases go towards paying the crafters a fair living wage that allows them to support their families in a sustainable way.

One World Bazaar is open on weekends until November 23rd.
