Sens acquire Warren Foegele from Los Angeles, conditional pick from Detroit

The Ottawa Senators traded for Warren Foegele, a forward with the Los Angeles Kings, on Thursday evening.

According to a statement from the Ottawa Senators, the team sent a second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft to the Kings in exchange for the forward, and the two teams will also be trading third-round picks.

Foegele has seven goals and two assists in 47 games this season. He scored 20 goals in the 2023-24 season and 24 goals in 2024-25. The newly acquired winger has 27 points (13 goals and 14 assists) across 86 playoff games.

The 29-year-old from Markham, Ont. was drafted 67^th by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2014 and played in four seasons for the team. He then spent three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, before joining the Kings.

Foegele has one year remaining on his contract, which carries a $3.5 million cap hit. He will become a UFA after the 2026-27 season.

Ottawa will get the lower of the Kings’ two third round picks in the 2026 draft — either the Kings’ own pick or the Dallas Stars’ pick, which Los Angeles acquired in a previous trade.

Los Angeles will get the better of Ottawa’s two picks in the 2026 draft — either their own pick or the Washington Capitals’ pick which they acquired in a previous trade. If the Senators and the Capitals both miss the playoffs, Los Angeles will get the worse of the two draft picks.

Conditional pick from Detroit

Late Thursday, the Senators also announced the team had acquired a conditional draft pick from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for veteran winger David Perron.

If Perron plays in a game before the end of the regular season or during the playoffs, the Red Wings will give the Senators the Columbus Blue Jackets’ fourth-round pick, which was acquired in a previous trade.

If the Red Wings advance to the second round of the playoffs and Perron appears in 50 per cent of the first-round games, the Red Wings will instead give up their own third-round pick to the Senators.

Perron, 37, has played in 92 regular season games with the Sens in the past two seasons, scoring 19 goals and 22 assists. He suited up for all six of the Senators’ 2025 playoff games against the Toronto Maple Leafs and had two goals and an assist.

This season’s NHL trade deadline is set for Friday at 3 p.m.

Ottawa climbed to within four points of the Boston Bruins for the second wild-card spot in the NHL’s Eastern Conference on Thursday with a 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames.
