Ottawa’s photo radar cameras caught a record number of speeders on city roads last year, and the city plans to install 24 more cameras in community safety zones, school zones and high-speed locations this year. Newly released statistics show 383,830 speeding tickets were issued through the automated speed enforcement program in 2024. There were 220,789 speeding tickets in 2023 (26 cameras), 127,939 tickets in 2022 (17 cameras) and 80,944 tickets in 2021 (eight cameras) through the photo radar camera program. There were 57 photo radar cameras in operation across Ottawa at the end of 2024, with three cameras in the final stages of being set up. The busiest photo radar camera was on King Edward Avenue, between Bolton Street and St. Patrick Street. The camera on the busy road connecting Ottawa and Gatineau over the interprovincial bridge caught 59,656 speeders in 2024, including 3,530 speeding drivers in December. The second-busiest camera was on Walkley Road, between Halifax Drive and Harding Avenue, with 35,546 speeding tickets issued in 2024, while the camera on St. Laurent Boulevard, between Noranda Avenue and Clark Avenue, caught 20,824 speeders last year. March was the busiest month for Ottawa’s photo radar cameras in 2024, with 43,416 speeding tickets issued through the automated speed enforcement program. January was the quietest month, with 19,634 speeding tickets issued through photo radar cameras. Thousands of potential speeding infractions caught by photo radar cameras were rejected due to unreadable license plates in 2024. Data provided by Coun.
