Police investigating suspicious fire at dispensary in Ottawa’s Centretown neighbourhood

Ottawa police are investigating another suspicious fire at a magic mushroom shop.

Emergency crews responded to a call for a fire at a business in the 200 block of Bank Street at approximately 4:20 a.m. Wednesday.

“The fire has been deemed suspicious, and the Arson and Explosion Unit is investigating,” the Ottawa Police Service said in a statement to CTV News Ottawa.

On Wednesday morning, an Ottawa police cruiser and an Ottawa Fire Services van were parked outside Fun Guyz magic mushroom store on Bank Street, and yellow police tape blocked the entrance to the business.

On Sept. 8, there were two fires at dispensaries near the ByWard Market and in Little Italy.

In the fire on Rideau Street, a vehicle crashed into a Shroomyz location and caught fire, with flames spreading to the building. There was also a fire at a Shroomyz location on Preston Street.

Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs called the fires concerning.

“We have a number of resources that are dedicated to investigating these arsons,” he told CTV News Ottawa.

Stubbs said police have shut down several illegal mushroom shops and illegal cannabis shops in the city, but said they’re quick to reopen.

“Unfortunately, with a lot these shops, we’ll execute a warrant, we’ll seize product, we’ll charge and arrest people, and they’re up and running very quickly soon after,” he said. “It’s a bit difficult but we’ll continue that work.”
