Ottawa police are looking at whether speed was a factor in a crash that left a pedestrian dead and another person with life-threatening injuries in Orléans Tuesday afternoon. Emergency crews responded to a crash involving pedestrians on Innes Road at Orchardview Avenue at 2:10 p.m. Ottawa police say two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle. “One succumbed to their injuries on scene, and the other has been transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries,” police said on X. A traffic light was knocked down at the intersection and there was damage to the front of the driver’s side of the vehicle. Debris was scattered across the intersection following the crash. Duty Insp. Scott Pettis told CTV News Ottawa’s Shaun Vardon that the vehicle had apparently jumped the curb. “When we arrived, we learned that a single motor vehicle, an SUV, had left the roadway, mounted the sidewalk, and had struck two pedestrians who were crossing the road at Orchardview Avenue,” Pettis said. “The vehicle then continued on a short distance and came to rest in the eastbound lanes of Innes Road.” Pettis said a man was pronounced dead at the scene and a woman was transported to hospital. No other details about the victims have been released. Three people in the vehicle were taken to hospital for assessment, according to paramedics. Pettis says speed might have played a role in the crash. “As it stands right now, from what we can determine, alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this accident, but what we’re looking at is that speed may have played a factor in this tragedy,” he said. Innes Road was closed between Tenth Line Road and Portobello Boulevard while police investigated. Anyone with information about the crash, or anyone who might have dash camera footage from the area, is asked to contact the Ottawa Police Service’s Fatal Collision Investigation Unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 2345.
