Dozens gathered at a Saskatoon high school Saturday to try adapted sports and learn about opportunities to stay active. The Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association teamed up with Special Olympics Saskatchewan and developt Pediatric Physical Therapy to host the event at École Canadienne-Française - Pavillon Gustave-Dubois. “We wanted to give opportunity to show all abilities how to move, and make sure that they’re aware of opportunities, a way to stay physical, and just have fun with their community,” said Katlin Zarry, a community outreach consultant with the Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association. Zarry said there were 12 stations set up in the gymnasiums and schoolyard, including wheelchair basketball, a wheelchair obstacle course, goalball, adaptive soccer and baggo through Special Olympics. The laser swim team also offered water-balloon activities. She said there were about 80 participants, and about five families had already expressed interest in signing up for wheelchair basketball after taking part in the event. “We want people to know that even if you have a disability, there’s always ways to keep moving,” Zarry said.
