Ottawa homicide unit leading investigation into ‘criminally suspicious’ death of man, 21

Homicide detectives are investigating after a 21-year-old man was found dead near Beechwood Cemetery. CTV’s Katie Griffin reports.

The Ottawa Police Service is investigating a suspicious death after a body was found on Meadow Park Place, east of the Beechwood Cemetery, Wednesday morning.

Police were called to the street at 8:13 a.m. The victim is a 21-year-old man. His name is not being released, pending autopsy results and next-of-kin notification.

The homicide unit is leading the investigation and the death is currently being treated as “criminally suspicious,” police said.

“If there’s anyone out there that has any information about this incident, or if you have video footage either from a dashcam from a car or from a residence that would cover this area last night into this morning, we would appreciate you reaching out,” said Sgt. Chris O’Brien.

Investigators are asking anyone with information regarding this incident or who may have dashcam footage and was travelling on the Aviation Parkway between 7 p.m. on Oct. 21 and 7 a.m. on Oct. 22 to contact the homicide unit.

“Investigators are also looking to speak with anyone who observed pedestrians on the Aviation Pathway in the area between Hemlock Road and Montreal Road during that time.”

Neighbours say nothing like this has happened on the street before.

“Disconcerting that this is going on right now and we don’t really know what’s happening,” said Andrew Sommerfeld. “Open the blinds and then the police were here and the lights flashing and I found out that there was a deceased body at the end of the street.”

“I have two young kids. It’s a pretty scary reality,” said Kelly Campbell, adding she feels sad for the victim’s family too.
