Ottawa police bust illegal after-hours bar on Rideau Street. 10 people and 2 corporations charged

Ten people and two corporations are facing charges following an investigation into an unlicensed after-hours establishment operating in Ottawa.

The Ottawa Police Service says officers launched an investigation last September after receiving community complaints about a non-operational licensed premises “believed to be functioning as an illegal after-hours bar” on Rideau Street near Dalhousie Street.

Police, Bylaw Services, Ottawa Fire Services and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario took part in the investigation.

“The investigation included witness interviews, extensive video analysis, document review through municipal and provincial channels, and follow-up inquiries with associated business operators. Officers also worked to identify 21 individuals connected to the establishment,” police said.

“During the investigation, officers executed search warrants to obtain evidence, which resulted in the seizure of electronic evidence, including CCTV recording equipment. Investigators conducted nearly 100 hours of video review as part of the case development.”

Police say investigators determined the establishment was “unlawfully serving alcohol, operating a shisha consumption lounge, employing unlicensed security personnel, and failing to comply with Ontario Fire Code regulations.”

Police say 10 people and two corporations are facing charges, and “11 suspects have yet to be identified.”

“In total, 85 Provincial Offence Notices and four Criminal Code charges have been laid,” police said.

Police say officers are continuing investigations into unlicensed establishments.

“The OPS recognizes the concerns raised by licensed business owners regarding illegal after-hours establishments operating outside regulatory requirements,” police said.

“This investigation demonstrates OPS’s commitment to addressing those concerns and supporting legitimate business operators.”
