OPP say driver who failed to move over for police on 401 blew twice the legal limit

Ontario Provincial Police say a driver from Lanark County is facing several charges, including impaired driving, after allegedly failing to move over for a police officer parked on the side of Highway 401 last weekend.

Police say an officer was on the side of the eastbound 401 in Quinte West with lights flashing when a driver sped past the cruiser.

The driver was pulled over and police say the individual registered more than double the legal limit of alcohol.

The 62-year-old driver is facing charges of impaired driving, failing to slow down for an emergency vehicle, driving while under suspension, and failing to have an insurance card.

Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act requires drivers to slow down and move into another lane, if it safe to do so, when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights. Drivers who fail to do so can be fined up to $2,000 for a first offence.

OPP say the driver has been released from custody with a court date.

“Slow down and move over for emergency vehicles and tow trucks and never drive impaired,” police said.
