Woman’s fatal fall from Ottawa balcony under SIU investigation

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating a fatal fall from an apartment building in Ottawa’s Heatherington neighbourhood on Wednesday.

According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ottawa police were called to the building on Heatherington Road near Albion Road North at around 4 p.m. Wednesday because a woman was hanging from a balcony.

“Officers attempted to talk to the woman. A short time later, the woman fell,” The SIU said.

The 37-year-old woman was pronounced dead in hospital. She has not been identified.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place Thursday, according to the SIU.

No other details about the incident were provided.

The SIU investigates the conduct of police officers in cases that result in death or serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
