A new fully immersive virtual reality attraction has opened at the corner of Rideau Street and Sussex Drive, offering players the chance to step inside life-sized games inspired by popular science-fiction worlds. Sandbox VR Ottawa is now operating above the CIBC Bank, next to the former Chapters building at 45 Rideau Street, where groups of up to six people can take part in shared virtual reality experiences that combine full-body motion capture, haptic feedback and real-time interaction. Sein Arshadi, general manager of Sandbox VR Ottawa says the experience goes well beyond traditional gaming. “We are a fully immersive virtual reality experience,” he says. “You’re not just playing a game you’re inside it.” Players are outfitted with wrist and ankle motion sensors, a haptic vest and a virtual reality headset. The equipment allows real-world movements to be mirrored instantly in a virtual environment, while built-in motors in the vest simulate physical sensations. “For example, if a zombie is scratching you from behind, you’re actually going to feel the scratch from behind,” says Arshadi. “It can be a little creepy, but it’s pretty cool.” The space uses a dozen overhead cameras in each room to track players’ movements and reactions. Sandbox VR currently offers eight experiences at the Ottawa location, including several tied to major entertainment franchises. “Our biggest partnership that we have right now is with Netflix,” says Caleb Coffing, a support opening coach and Chicago location manager with Sandbox VR. “Some of our most popular experiences are Squid Game and Stranger Things.” Other popular titles include zombie horror and adventure-based scenarios, all developed exclusively by Sandbox VR. The technology behind the experience relies on motion-capture sensors equipped with reflective markers that communicate with cameras surrounding the play area. “When I move in real life, it moves me the same way in the experience,” says Coffing. “It’s intense and you definitely work up a sweat, but it’s a ton of fun.” Sandbox VR says its Ottawa opening is part of a larger global expansion. The company currently operates dozens of locations worldwide and plans to open approximately 80 more by the end of 2026, bringing its total footprint to about 140 locations. “Sandbox VR tries to release two new experiences each year,” says Arshadi. “We’re really looking forward to being part of Ottawa’s booming downtown scene.” Each session lasts between 30 and 40 minutes and costs about $60 per person. The company recommends booking online in advance due to demand.
