Hundreds in Eastern Ontario kick off the New Year with polar dips

More than 200 people submerged in icy cold water at Britannia Beach on New Year’s Day, to bring in 2026 in the coolest way possible.

“I’m doing this cause I do it every year. A good start to the New year,” says Tara Gosling, who took the cold plunge. “I love ice baths. I want to build a habit every year. Starting on the new year. Every year, I’m like ‘let’s get back into it.’”

Held by Cold Play Ottawa, the Ottawa Cold Plunge & Ritual Recovery brought people together on Thursday to reset and start the year with intention.

“The health benefits of cold plunging are a great thing for us to be doing. We look at, circulation and inflammation in our bodies; it’s a great way to help you just better your health. We come together as a community,” says Tracy McDonald, a volunteer with Ottawa Cold Play.

The annual icy cold dip encourages all ages and experiences to dip at their own pace, while creating a safe space of like-minded people heading into the New Year.

“New year, new goals and it’s for a great cause. I just want to support and show my kids get out there and do something new, try something different,” says Ayan Sheikh Savoury, cold plunger.

Eventgoers were also encouraged to donate funds to the Distress Centre Ottawa & Region, a local non-profit that provides free crisis support.

“We are actually doing voluntary donations for the Distress Centre of Ottawa. Many of the people who do cold plunges have come from backgrounds where they may have addictions or mental health. It’s a great way to give back to our community,” says McDonald.

Perth polar bear plunge

Over 100 people took part in Perth Polar Bear Plunge in Perth, Ont., an event that raised funds for the Perth Royal Canadian Legion.

Steve Stewart, an attendee at the event, says 120 people plunged into the 1 C waters of the Tay River.

According to a newsletter from event organizers sent out earlier this week, the event raised over $10,000. The donated funds will contribute to safety and accessibility improvements at the Legion, and support programs for veterans.
