Half of the races for school trustee positions at the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) have already been decided after a handful of candidates were acclaimed on Friday. The nomination deadline for this fall’s municipal election passed on Friday afternoon, and only a single candidate registered for five of the ten trustee positions on the OCSB schoolboard. The following candidates are acclaimed: Three candidates were also acclaimed in the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est. No candidates were acclaimed in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) and the Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario. A list of the registered candidates can be found on the City of Ottawa’s website. Candidates register for OCDSB despite supervision More than 30 candidates have registered to run for school board trustee in the Ottawa Carleton-District School Board (OCDSB), despite the school board remaining under supervision. The Ontario government took control of the board in June 2025 after the board posted deficit budgets. The province removed the board’s 12 elected trustees and appointed Robert Plamondon as supervisor. In April, Education Minister Paul Calandra said Plamondon will remain in place at the OCDSB until the “budget is balanced.” Calandra introduced restrictions to the honorarium and discretionary spending of trustees in English and Catholic school boards. Calandra also created two new roles, a Chief Executive Officer and a Chief Education Officer, which would be responsible for delivering the budget and “advancing student achievement,” respectively. “Trustees will still have a role to play in terms of advocating for their community and parents at the board, but what we’ve done is reduce or eliminate much of the division that was brought on by trustees,” Calandra told CTV News Ottawa in April. Despite the sweeping changes, 33 candidates will be running in the OCDSB’s 12 zones. The municipal election is Oct. 26. With files from CTV’s Josh Pringle.
