A 33-year-old Ottawa man is facing a $1,600 fine after being stopped speeding 81 kilometres an hour over the speed limit in Gatineau, Que. The Sûreté du Québec says an officer observed a driver going 181 kilometres on Highway 50, near the Lorrain exit, at approximately 1:30 a.m. Saturday. The speed limit on Highway 50 in Gatineau is 100 kilometres an hour. Police say the the driver received a $1,618 fine and 18 demerit points for the speeding violation, and his licence was suspended for seven days. “The Sûreté du Québec reminds the public that speeding is one of the leading causes of fatal collisions on Quebec roads,” police said.
