Cleanup underway after 12 cm of snow blankets Ottawa

The cleanup is underway after the biggest snowfall of the season so far, but officials warn it will be a slow commute across Ottawa today.

Environment Canada lifted the snowfall warning for the Ottawa-Gatineau region overnight. A total of 12 cm of snow was recorded at the Ottawa Airport on Wednesday and Thursday morning.

School buses are running for all schools in Ottawa today, but officials warn some buses may be delayed.

The City of Ottawa says “all resources have been deployed” to clear roads and sidewalks.

“Work to clear and treat sidewalks, arterial roads and the winter cycling network will transition to residential neighbourhoods (Wednesday) evening and continue overnight through to the morning,” the city said on its website.

“In some areas of the city, this is the first residential plow run of the season, and we are asking for your patience, as operations may take longer than normal.”

Forecast

Environment Canada’s forecast calls for an additional two centimetres of snow on Thursday. Periods of light snow will continue all day, with winds gusting 30 km/h to 50 km/h. The temperature will be steady near -9 C.

It will be partly cloudy tonight with a 40 per cent chance of flurries. Low -14 C, with the wind chill making it feel like -23 overnight.

Friday will see a mix of sun and cloud in the morning before becoming mainly cloudy in the afternoon. High -5 C.

Saturday will be cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of flurries. High -5 C.

The outlook for Sunday calls for a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 per cent chance of flurries. High -10 C.

Monday will see a mix of sun and cloud. High -10 C.

The normal temperatures for this time of year are a high of -3 C and a low of -10 C.
