City of Ottawa says 26 long-term care residents awaiting relocation following flooding

The City of Ottawa says 26 residents in the Carleton Lodge long-term care home will be temporarily relocated following a late December flooding incident.

The Barrhaven long-term care home flooded after a pipe burst on the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 27. A news release from the city said there were no injuries in the flooding, but 40 rooms sustained damaged causing some residents to be temporarily displaced from their usual lodging.

“Those residents were relocated within the home initially and then some of them are in the process of being relocated to other facilities in the region based on need by the provincial government,” said Coun. Wilson Lo, who’s ward Carleton Lodge is in.

Low says it was a sprinkler pipe that burst causing the damage. According to Lo, Carleton Lodge was the capital’s first municipal long term care home and the long-term care home recently celebrated it’s 50th anniversary.

The daughter of a resident who did not want her name published said the flooding in mother’s room was significant, causing the ceiling to almost collapse. The daughter says her mother’s bed was relocated to a common room within the lodge with four other women.

The daughter says Carleton Lodge staff have been working double shifts to keep residents safe and thanks staff them for their dedication.

According to the daughter, her mother will be moved temporarily to another residence during the reconstruction. She says they have met with a Champlain Health at Home coordinator to discuss their preferred relocation options.

The city says Ontario Health atHome is leading the relocation process, with support from city staff.

There have been concerns about how far away the temporary accommodations could be, and Lo says he it is not clear which definition of “region” the province is using.

“Some residents have been relocated home with family and relatives, but some residents will have to be relocated to other facilities in the region but again what region means, I’m not sure.” Lo said.

The resident’s daughter says it’s unclear how long her mother will remain relocated, but officials have told her it may take up to three months to repair the damage. She says she has been told that once repairs are completed, residents will be guaranteed the option to return.
