City of Ottawa has ‘sufficient supply’ of road salt

The City of Ottawa insists it has a “sufficient supply” of salt for roads and sidewalks this winter, as other Ontario municipalities deal with a salt shortage.

Ottawa has an agreement with Windsor Salt for a road salt supply.

Several Ontario municipalities have said they are facing a potential shortage of road salt this winter, including London and Barrie. In London, city officials said crews will plow major streets more frequently to reduce the need for road salt and the city will use more sand in combination with salt.

Ottawa’s area manager of road services says there are no concerns about a salt shortage in the capital.

“The City has an agreement with its vendor, Windsor Salt, and has confirmed they have sufficient supply to meet the City’s needs for the remainder of the snow season,” Christopher Paquette said in a statement to CTV News Ottawa.

“Currently, we do not anticipate any shortages.”
