Brockville police seek suspect, vehicle in connection with grandparent scam

Brockville police are asking residents to keep an eye out for a suspect and vehicle believed to be connected to reported “grandparent” scams in the city.

Police said they had received multiple reports over the last several days of the scam, with some victims having lost thousands of dollars.

The scam usually involves someone calling a person and claiming to be a loved one in trouble, who needs money urgently. The caller typically tells the target to keep the request a secret from other family members. The request for money can come in the form of cash, gift cards, or e-transfers. Sometimes, a “courier” will be sent to the home to collect the payment on behalf of the “relative.”

In this case in Brockville, police say they have identified a suspect who is believed to be involved and a vehicle.

The suspect is described from the victim as a male of South Asian appearance, with a medium build and a black beard, police said. His age is unknown. The vehicle the suspect returned to is white and is believed to be a newer model Honda Civic, and possibly with a decoration hanging from the rear-view mirror.

Police ask residents to share details about the scam with loved ones, particularly older relatives, with tips to help them avoid falling prey to fraudsters.

• Pause and think – scammers rely on panic
• Hang up and contact your loved one directly using a known number
• Verify the story with another family member
• Never send money or share personal info based on an unexpected call
• Trust your instincts – if it feels off, it likely is
