1,300 drivers charged for speeding on eastern Ontario roads during Canada Road Safety Week

More than 1,300 drivers were nabbed for speeding on eastern Ontario roads over the past week.

Ontario Provincial Police joined police services from across the country in Canada Road Safety Week, focusing on traffic and road safety heading into the summer.

Police say OPP officers in eastern Ontario laid more than 2,500 charges during Canada Road Safety Week between March 13 and 19. The total included 1,303 tickets for speeding and 38 stunt driving charges.

Officers also issued 71 tickets for distracted driving, 47 tickets for impaired driving and 151 tickets for failing to have insurance.

In Ottawa, a tow truck operator was charged with distracted driving on Hwy. 416 after an officer noticed a driver watching YouTube while driving, according to police.

Last Thursday, police said a G2 driver was charged with stunt driving after attempting to raise an officer.
