Young person charged with hate crime at North Bay high school

North Bay police say they have charged a young person with a hate crime-related offence.

A news release Thursday said the charges are related to “a hate-motivated incident that occurred at a local secondary school.”

“One young person has been arrested in connection with the incident,” police said.

Citing the Youth Criminal Justice Act, police said they couldn’t release the age of the suspect, the group that was targeted, the date of the incident or any other details of what happened.

The accused has been charged with public incitement of hatred and criminal harassment and was held for a bail hearing.

Under the Criminal Code of Canada, public incitement of hatred includes “everyone who, by communicating statements in any public place, incites hatred against any identifiable group where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace.”
