Major ice storm hitting parts of Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada

School buses have been cancelled across northeastern Ontario on Wednesday morning as the region is hit by a late winter storm.

Freezing rain and heavy snow are forecast for much of the area, including Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay and Timmins.

Environment Canada says snow and ice pellet amounts of 10 to 20 cm are forecast, with “several hours of freezing rain and ice pellets” this morning through this evening.

“A wintry mix of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain is likely today,” the yellow-coded winter storm warning said.

“Precipitation should change to all snow with local blowing snow this evening before tapering off overnight. The track of the low-pressure system is still somewhat uncertain. As a result, confidence is low regarding exact precipitation amounts and types. Regardless of the precipitation type, hazardous travel conditions are likely.”

The freezing rain and snow mean roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate and travel will likely be challenging.

“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions,” Environment Canada said.

“Allow extra time for travel. If driving, turn on your lights, slow down and maintain a safe following distance. Be very careful if walking or driving.”
