Wawa hotel disturbance uncovers guns, meth, cocaine, more

IPV call at Wawa hotel leads to seizure of $142,000 in drugs, handguns, ammo and trafficking gear. Two from Sault Ste. Marie face multiple charges.

A disturbance at a Wawa hotel has led to the seizure of three handguns and an estimated $142,000 in illicit drugs.

Ontario Provincial Police and Algoma Paramedic Services responded to an intimate partner violence report at the hotel at about 9:30 a.m. on March 31.

“One individual was arrested for assault,” the OPP said in a new release.

During a search of that person, police said officers found suspected controlled substances, leading investigators to obtain a warrant for the hotel room involved.

Cash, drugs and guns seized

“As a result of the search, officers seized three illegal handguns and ammunition, Canadian currency, a vacuum sealer, digital scales and quantities of suspected controlled substances,” said OPP.

The substances included roughly 1.2 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, 450 grams of suspected cocaine, 100 grams of suspected fentanyl and a quantity of hydromorphone.

“The estimated street value of the suspected drugs is approximately $142,000,” said police.

Charges laid

A 32-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie faces charges including assault, spousal assault, overcoming resistance by choking, resisting arrest, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, possession of property obtained by crime, four drug trafficking offences, and 13 other firearm-related counts — including 12 counts of possessing a firearm or ammunition contrary to a probation order.

Further, a 21-year-old also from the Sault was charged with drug trafficking, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, storing a firearm improperly, and two counts of possessing a firearm or ammunition contrary to a probation order.

“Due to the intimate partner violence nature of this investigation, the OPP will not be releasing the names of the accused,” said police.

Both accused were held for bail hearings and remanded into custody.
