A 25-year-old man from North Bay, Ont., is in custody facing multiple charges after police located him with outstanding warrants and seized suspected drugs and counterfeit currency during his arrest last week.

The North Bay Police Service said the incident began about 3 p.m. on Jan. 8 on McLaren Street.

Drone-assisted foot chase ensued

The accused was wanted on two counts of failing to comply with a release order and one count of failing to comply with a probation order.

“When officers attempted to stop him, the suspect fled on foot,” police said in a news release on Tuesday.

Multiple local police units responded to contain the area.

The police service deployed a remotely piloted aircraft system, also known as a drone, to assist in the search.

“The accused was located hiding under a vehicle in the 500 block of Ann Street and apprehended without incident,” police said.

Counterfeit cash, drug seized

A search of the man following his arrest led to the seizure of 3.3 grams of suspected cocaine and three counterfeit $50 bills.

All of the fake banknotes seized bore the same serial number of AHU5885903. This serial has been reported to be circulating by multiple policing agencies across Canada, including in a recent advisory by local police.

Police praise coordinated response

Insp. Scott McFarlane commended the coordinated police effort.

“Multiple units responded quickly and worked together to safely contain the area and apprehend the suspect,” McFarlane said.

“The coordinated effort … ensured the arrest was made without incident. During the arrest, counterfeit bills were seized."

“The investigation into the counterfeit currency is ongoing,” the police service added.

The accused now faces charges of possession of counterfeit money and possession of a controlled substance, in addition to four charges related to breaches of his probation and release orders.

The accused appeared for a bail hearing and remains in custody pending a future court date.
