The Manitoba New Democrats have chosen who they want to represent their party in the northern riding of The Pas-Kameesak. Party members voted for a representative in the next general provincial election. It comes after the death of their NDP MLA, Amanda Lathlin, in March. NDP voters selected Jennifer Flett to represent them on the ballot. Flett was a councillor and the first elected vice chief for nearby Opaskwayak Cree Nation. Flett also spent 20 years working for the Correctional Service of Canada. The riding had been represented by Lathlin since 2015. Lathlin was the first First Nations woman to be elected to the Manitoba legislature. She died in March at the age of 49. The next general provincial election must be held on or before October 5, 2027.
