Two commercial motor vehicle drivers -- one from Winnipeg and the other from Brampton -- have been charged after police in northern Ontario discovered two transports missing wheels last weekend.

The first incident took place March 28 around 8:05 a.m. on Highway 11-17 near Nipigon.

“An officer on patrol observed a commercial vehicle travelling on Highway 11-17 that had lost wheels and tires from its trailer,” the OPP said in a news release March 29.

“A Level 1 commercial vehicle inspection was conducted as a result.”

The 59-year-old driver from Winnipeg was charged with driving with a wheel separation and driving a CMV without the required inspection. A Winnipeg company that owns the commercial vehicle was also charged with having a CMV on the road with a wheel separation.

A little more than half an hour later, OPP officers received a report of a southbound CMV on Highway 11 that had lost wheels and tires from its trailer.

“Officers located the vehicle in the Town of Beardmore,” police said.

“A subsequent Level 1 inspection revealed multiple defects, resulting in the removal of the vehicle’s plates.”

The 24-year-old driver from Brampton was charged with driving a CMV with a part detached and with a wheel separated. Other charges include failing to accurately file a complete under-vehicle inspection report and driving an unsafe CMV.

“The OPP investigates thousands of preventable CMV collisions every year, making this a serious road safety issue,” police said.

“The OPP remains committed to delivering on its provincial traffic safety strategy, which aims to reduce and prevent injuries and fatalities, and enhance safety on roads, waterways and trails.”
