Two Sudbury students win medals at Canada-Wide Science Fair

Two students from Greater Sudbury won medals at a national science fair held recently at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.

Six students who represented Sudbury at the recent national science fair in Fredericton fared well at the competition, with two of the projects taking home medals.

The students submitted five projects -- including two partner projects -- to the 2025 Canada-Wide Science Fair, held from May 31 to June 7 at the University of New Brunswick.

“Although one student was unable to attend, her project partner presented on behalf of them both,” the Sudbury Regional Science Fair committee said in a news release Tuesday.

The group joined hundreds of young scientists from across the country for a week of competition.

“Every student spoke with at least five judges on Monday,” the committee said.

“On Tuesday, some students were interviewed for special awards, while others met with additional judges. On Thursday and Friday, the finalists practised their science communication skills by engaging with school groups and the general public.”

Two of the five projects from Sudbury received excellence awards. Marymount Academy student Mercia Thompson won silver in the junior division for Thompson’s ‘anti-pull collar for dogs’ project.

And Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School student Felix Naghi won bronze in the intermediate division for his project, ‘BIOGEN’ (bone implant optimization and generation for enhanced reconstruction).

“Beyond the competition, students participated in a wide range of enriching and memorable activities,” the news release said.

“These included hands-on lab experiences on Tuesday afternoon and full-day excursions on Wednesday to Hopewell Rocks and Cape Enrage. Throughout the week, students enjoyed pin trading, social events, and opportunities to connect with like-minded peers from across the country.”
