Tow truck driver dumps gas into Sudbury creek

Meeting this week, members of the Greater Sudbury Police Services Board were told about an incident that took place last fall involving the illegal dumping of gasoline.

In a report to the board, police said the incident took place Oct. 24 at a Petro Canada station on Regent Street.

“A tow truck operator was observed dumping garbage cans of gasoline into a creek,” the report said.

“Officers arrived on scene and located the tow truck driver. Video footage confirmed the driver’s actions.”

It emerged that the truck driver mistakenly filled his truck with gasoline, rather than diesel fuel.

He then “siphoned gas out from the tank, deliberately dumping the gasoline in the nearby creek.”

The driver was charged under the Environmental Protection Act and environmental agencies and the City of Greater Sudbury were notified.

“The tow company was tasked with hiring an environmental service to clean the creek and area.”
