Thunder Bay teen killed in crash on northern Ont. highway

Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred on Highway 589, north of Thunder Bay.

OPP reported that on Saturday at about 2 p.m., officers received a report of an overdue motorist. The individual’s last known location was along Highway 589, between Moving Post Road and Old Hall Road.

Vehicle located after extensive search

Following the report, police conducted what they described as “extensive patrols” of the area. During the search, a single motor vehicle was located a considerable distance from the highway, north of Moving Post Road.

A 19-year-old male from Thunder Bay was pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities have not released any other details about the man’s identity.

Collision reconstructionists have been called in to assist with the ongoing investigation.

OPP confirmed, in a news release Sunday, that “all resources have cleared from Highway 589” following the initial response and investigation at the site.

Police seeking public assistance

“The investigation continues,” OPP said, with an appeal to the public for information.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or who has dashcam or surveillance footage from the area between Moving Post Road and Old Hall Road along Highway 589 from Aug. 23, to come forward.

This collision follows another fatal crash in northwestern Ontario that claimed two lives earlier in the day.
