Thunder Bay man charged with arson, assaulting police

A Thunder Bay man is charged with arson and assaulting police after an incident Wednesday evening in the city’s north side.

The Thunder Bay Police Service responded to a call on Algoma Street North shortly after 7 p.m. on Sept. 17.

“Police had received information from witnesses that a male was attempting to set a car on fire,” police said in a news release.

The fire was extinguished before officers arrived on the scene.

Police then received new information that a man matching the suspect’s description was seen near the intersection of Algoma Street and Red River Road.

“The suspect became combative with officers and attempted to resist arrest,” police said.

After being taken into custody, “the suspect proceeded to assault officers by spitting at them.”

The man has been charged with arson and two counts of assaulting police.

He made a court appearance Thursday and was remanded into custody pending a future court appearance.
