Teens able to flee major residential fire in North Bay

Seven teens escaped a burning home in North Bay's Airport Hill area early Saturday after being alerted by smoke alarms.

Thanks to working smoke alarms, seven teenagers staying at a residence on Janey Avenue in North Bay were able to evacuate when a fire broke out on Saturday morning.

In a news release Monday, Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders said firefighters responded just after 5 a.m.

“Upon arrival, emergency crews from all three stations were met with heavy fire in the roof and at the rear of the home,” the release said.

“All of the seven teenagers staying at the home that evening were able to safely evacuate after being alerted to the danger by the smoke alarms in the residence.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation by members of the fire prevention division.

“This fire is yet another reminder that properly located, properly maintained smoke and carbon monoxide alarms will provide you with the early notification required to safely evacuate both you and your loved ones from your residence in an emergency,” the release said.
