Two youths face serious charges in connection with the stabbing death of a 23-year-old last weekend in Sault Ste. Marie.

A 15-year-old has been charged with second-degree murder and a 16-year-old has been charged as an accessory after the fact in connection with the incident.

Their identities are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

“When there’s a homicide in our community, it makes people uneasy. So the fact that officers have located two people and have charged them in relation to this homicide is information that’s important that we get out,” said Sault police spokesperson Lincoln Louttit, speaking with CTV News Wednesday afternoon.

Discovery and response

Police were called to a residence on the 100 block of Poplar Avenue at about 8:50 p.m. on Saturday after a report of an injured person. Officers located a victim with life-threatening injuries.

“The victim was transported to hospital and later succumbed to their injuries,” the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said in a news release Wednesday.

The death was deemed a homicide. Police said the victim was known to both suspects in the case.

“It was important that we were able to notify the public that the victim was known to the accused,” said Louttit.

“That was information we want to make sure we did get out to the public as soon as we could.”

The police investigation

“The investigation revealed the first accused had stabbed the victim multiple times, causing their death,” the release said.

“The investigation also revealed the second accused fled the scene with, and aided, the first accused.”

On Tuesday, investigators executed search warrants at three residences in the 200 block of McNabb Street. The 16-year-old was taken into custody while leaving a nearby residence.

“The investigation led, detectives to executing a few search warrants on Tuesday,” Louttit said.

“As a result of those search warrants and the investigation that took place two youth were arrested and charged in connection with the homicide.”

The 15-year-old, who was found on Bay Street, is charged with second-degree murder. The 16-year-old is charged with accessory after the fact to murder and accessory after the fact to commit an indictable offence.

Both youths were held in custody pending a bail hearing.
