A 45-year-old local man is facing multiple charges after police in Greater Sudbury say he broke into the same Cedar Street business twice in three days, stealing cash and electronics on both occasions. The Greater Sudbury Police Service’s Break, Enter and Robbery Unit arrested the accused on Aug. 19 following an investigation into the two commercial break-and-enters. Police said the first incident occurred in the early morning hours of Aug. 16, when an individual entered through an unsecured exterior door and stole cash and electronic items, while the second break-in took place on Aug. 18, with the same individual gaining entry by smashing an exterior door before taking similar items. “Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from both incidents and were able to identify the person believed to be responsible,” police said in a news release. “Officers located and arrested the individual after a short struggle where the individual resisted arrest,” police added. Police said a subsequent search resulted in the recovery of property believed to have been stolen during one of the incidents. Charges laid As a result of the investigation, the accused has been charged with two counts of breaking and entering and committing an indictable offence, two counts of disguise with intent, possession of break-in instruments, possession of property obtained by crime, obstructing a peace officer, and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order. The individual was held in custody and attended bail court on Aug. 20 and has since been remanded into custody. Ongoing downtown enforcement “This arrest is part of GSPS’s ongoing efforts to address crime and disorder in the downtown core,” police said. Police said property crimes, including break-and-enters, significantly affect local businesses, employees and community members. The service added that its officers remain committed to identifying and apprehending those responsible through proactive enforcement, targeted investigations and increased presence in the downtown.
