Six vehicles placed out of service in northern Ont. highway safety blitz

A joint commercial vehicle enforcement blitz conducted over the weekend in northern Ontario by several provincial agencies has resulted in dozens of charges and several vehicles being taken off the road.

The initiative took place on Oct. 25 and 26 at the Ministry of Transportation Spragge scales on Highway 17. It involved officers from the Ontario Provincial Police’s East Algoma detachment and Sudbury’s OPP traffic incident management and enforcement team, alongside MTO inspectors and Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers.

Over the two days, officers conducted 165 vehicle checks – including nine Level I and two Level II Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance inspections.

The checks led to six vehicles being placed “out of service,” with one having its licence plate removed.

Additionally, a total of 46 provincial offence notices were issued by the involved services, along with two Part III summonses and 26 various warnings.

MNR conservation officers also participated, conducting checks on harvested big game to ensure hunters possessed valid documentation, including an Outdoors Card, appropriate licences and tags. They verified that firearms and harvested animal information were properly documented and labelled in accordance with provincial regulations.

Collaboration commitment to safety

“This joint enforcement initiative highlights the continued collaboration between the OPP, MNR and MTO to enhance commercial motor vehicle safety, improve road safety and ensure regulatory compliance,” OPP said in a news release.

The agencies collectively said that they remain committed to reducing collisions, deterring unsafe vehicle operation and protecting Ontario’s natural resources.
