Sentencing hearing delayed for Sudbury woman who stabbed her neighbour

A Sudbury woman's sentencing for a 2023 stabbing that paralyzed her Chelmsford neighbour is delayed to Sept. 4.

A contested sentencing hearing for a woman who repeatedly stabbed her neighbour in Chelmsford last year has been delayed.

In court Wednesday, the lawyer for Jessie Brave, 33, said he wanted a mental health assessment completed for his client, and they were disputing certain parts of a pre-sentence report.

Brave was originally charged with attempted murder for the attack on Josee Rouleau, 31, who lived in the same apartment building.

In a December story with CTV News, her family said Rouleau was left with devastating injuries. She was stabbed six times and was paralyzed in both legs.

Pleaded to aggravated assault

The attempted murder charge was later dropped and Brave pled guilty earlier this year to aggravated assault.

She admitted to stabbing Rouleau at the Errington Avenue apartment complex on Nov. 22, 2024. Rouleau’s family told CTV News that Brave repeatedly banged on the door until Rouleau opened it and was brutally attacked.

In court on Wednesday, Brave’s lawyer, Michael Michel, said he wanted to reschedule the contested sentencing hearing because they had just received the pre-sentence, parts of which they disagreed with.

Michel also said he wanted a mental health assessment completed before sentencing and asked for time to make those arrangements.

Ontario Court Justice K.A. Sherwood agreed to a Sept. 4 date to have the case return to court, by which time Michel said he hoped to have an update on when the assessment will be ready.
